Janet Miller Wiseman
The Negotiation Collaborative
Divorce and Family Mediation and Clinical Services

Janet Miller Wiseman is one of the two longest established and experienced mediators in Massachusetts and is a seasoned psychotherapist. When in 1979 she founded The Negotiation Collaborative, she helped to co-spearhead a shift from adversarial negotiation in Massachusetts divorce to a much more usual expectation of cooperative settlement of disputes through mediation and negotiation. Janet co-founded the Massachusetts Council on Family Mediation in 1982 and was President for two years.

Long Established Individual Psychotherapist, Couple and Family Therapist for 39 years

As a pioneer in the field of divorce mediation in Massachusetts, Janet has over 35 years experience in helping parties understand the requirements and statutes of divorce and in helping them develop creative solutions to co-parenting, resource sharing and asset division.

Because of long experience, Janet is able to meet with parties for two-hour sessions to quickly help them reach agreements about:

• Co-parenting and talking with children
• Child expense sharing
• Support of one another, if necessary
• Protecting the children should parents die before the children complete an
   undergraduate education
• Medical/dental insurance coverage
• Transfer, buy-out or sale of real estate
• Division of investments, retirement plans, responsibility for debts
• Tax consequences of divisions; allocation of head of household,
dependency exemption and child-care tax credits
• Mortgage interest and real estate tax deductions

Pioneer in Divorce Mediation: Developing Creative Alternatives

There are comparatively few certified divorce mediators by the Mass Council on Family Mediation. To be a certified mediator, one must continuously complete course work in family law, mediation and negotiation. In 2013 alone, Janet has extended her knowledge in courses on financial and estate planning, ethics, the new 2012 alimony law and how it interfaces with the August 2013 child support guidelines, and numerous other courses.

Family Therapist Training in 1972

Janet is the divorce mediator other mediators and lawyers turn to for expert
recommendations and in-depth understanding of how to help couples talk with their
children about divorce, given their ages and developmental stages.
