Family mediation uses collaborative negotiation to process and solve problems and resolve conflicts in intimate and family relationships. Negotiation helps people stop fighting, start communicating respectfully, and to situate themselves in the other’s perspective. Family mediation is suitable for couples, whole families, sibling groups, relatives or individuals in helping to resolve such issues as:

"Mediation Therapy: Short-term Decision Making for Relationships in Conflict" is an intervention invented and designed by Janet Miller Wiseman to help parties in conflict reach decisions about whether to:
• Get married or live together
• Separate or divorce
• Institutionalize an aging parent or special needs child
• Send children to public or private schools etc.
This decision making process is also used by and taught to:
• Managers needing to reach critical decisions
• Hospital, EAP, rehabilitation and special needs teams
• Psychotherapy practitioners etc.
Pre-and post marriage and step-family mediation for parties to:
• Learn to negotiate
• Make decisions about whether to separate or divorce
• Thoughtfully collaborate and time telling children about separation
• Design or review living arrangements/college plans for the children’s benefit
• Sensitively discuss co-parenting or step-parenting issues
• Undertake a symmetrical and neutral guardian ad litem process
